Handy Gardening Secrets annuals

Annuals

Winter annuals are plants that have an annual life span but tend to germanate in the fall or winter and bloom in late autumn/fall, winter or early spring. They spend most of the year as seeds to survive dry conditions.

Some annuals are grown for their interesting foliage colors or textures. They range in size from bedding plants less than a foot tall to giants that grow eight feet or more.

Annuals are those wonderful little plants that bloom their little hearts out every growing season, being humbly content to be poked into what otherwise would be a bald spot in your garden. Some gardeners tend to look down their nose at annuals.

Old, forgotten types of annuals are being reintroduced, and many of these are noteworthy for their statuesque shapes or spectacular perfume. A few years ago, when perennials were the buzz, the idea of annuals being described as cutting edge would have been laughed at.

Generally speaking, annuals are extremely versatile in the garden, usually bright and outgoing flowers, and predictable in habit. Many annuals continue to bloom and grow all through their season.

Annuals are flowers that complete their life cycle in one season, during which they grow, flower, and produce seed. Athough alot of annuals self-seed, certain characteristics may be lost, since the parents of each seed are unknown.
