Aster - Tall Matsumoto

The Aster Tall Matsumoto, 'Callistephus chinensis', is a florist quality cut flower variety with tall, strong stems and an unusual bi-color flower with a yellow center. This Aster has a very long vase life. It will provide an "end-of-the-season pick-me-up" with its dazzling, radiant, medium sized flowers. The 2 inch wide flowers have white petals tipped bright pink with contrasting yellow centers. The Tall Matsumoto blooms from mid to late summer up to the first hard fall frost. The Aster Milady prefers rich, deep, light soil. Add compost to improve marginal soil quality. The plants require average water and they do not like to dry out. Pinch off faded flowers to encourage new blooms. Plant in the spring after the last average frost date. This plant is excellent as a cut flower and the bright colors look great in any border. ... more info

Bitter Melon The Bitter Melon Short Fu Qwa, Foo-Gwa, 'Momordica charantia', is widely used in the Orient. The Bitter Melon is also called a Balsam Pear. The bitter flavor of bitter melon is due to quinine, and is a taste that is quickly acquired by adults and kids. This soft flavor softens as it absorbs other flavors. It is used in stir-fry, stews, steamed, braised, or curried. Plant in the spring, 1 to 2 weeks after the last frost when soil temperatures are warm. The Bitter Melon prefers light and well drained soil. Keep the plant moist but not soggy. Harvest the fruit when they are no longer than 6 inches and are still light green in color.
