The Basil Genovese Italian, 'Ocimum basilicum', is widely grown in Italy. Genovese basil has a strong basil flavor and aroma and is a favorite for pesto. There is nothing like the smell of basil. Basil is the smell of summer. Genovese basil will not disappoint the basil lover. It has a particularly strong fragrance and flavor making it excellent for almost any basil dish. Gourd - Ornamental - Crown of Thorns The Gourd Ornamental Shenot Crown of Thorns Blend, 'Cucurbita pepo var. ovifera', is an amazingly symmetrical gourd with 10 little "fingers" that protrude to make a crown. The vine is smaller than many gourd vines, and it can be grown in large hanging baskets or containers. Harvest the Crown of Thorns in time to use as a holiday decorations or crafts projects, such as weird-shaped small bowls. Shenot was selected for it's very uniform gourds. Plant in the spring, 2 to 4 weeks after the last average frost date and when soil temperatures have risen above 60 degrees. Place the gourds in full sun. Hard-shelled gourds should be kept in the garden as long as there is any life left in the vines. |
