Bean - Fava Broad - Windsor
Reward your taste buds with this heavenly Mediterranean bean. Each pod contains 5 to 7 large, oblong-shaped, flat, light green beans. The Windsor bean has 2 to 3 foot tall plants that are glossy green with 6 to 8 inch long pods. Windsor Fava Beans prefer deep, heavy soils. Plant in very early spring, and in warm winter climates they can be planted in the fall for spring harvest. The Bean Broad Fava Windsor, 'Vicia faba', is Mediterranean heirloom with a delectable nutty/pea flavor and has been enjoyed buy Europeans for centuries. The small fava Windsor bean pods can be sliced and eaten like snap beans, and the foliage tips can be pinched, which makes one of the tastiest spring greens. Pepper - Chile - Mulato Isleno Wash your hands immediately. This mildly hot Pablano-type roasting/stuffing pepper is dark green maturing to a very dark chocolate brown color. Harvest when peppers begin to turn green to brown. The peppers are 3 inches wide and 6 inches long and are heart shaped. Note: To get a jump on the season transplant outside, use a walls-of-water or some black plastic to maintain and increase temperatures. It has a very distinct and wonderful flavor. The Pepper Hot Mulato Isleno, 'Capsicum annuum', is a large Anaheim-type pepper for stuffing or roasting. Peppers use quite a bit of water but prefer to be watered deeply and not too often. When dried for chili powder or strung on a string for decoration, the Pablanos are called Ancho peppers. Use gloves and do not touch any other part of the body after harvesting. |
