Calendula - Pacific Beauty
Calendula, an old English cottage garden flower, is not fancy, but if you are looking for something with large, beautiful flowers that is easy to grow, this is the plant. The Pacific Beauty has 5 inch bright orange and yellow, double, daisy-like flowers. Plant in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked, and in warm climates plant in late summer or early fall for winter/spring bloom. The soils should be kept moist but not soggy. Pacific Beautys prefer full sun locations. The Calendula is a long lasting cut flower and looks great planted in masses, such as in borders, parking strips and containers. In warm climates, they bloom fall through spring and in cool climates, spring and early summer. They are very adaptive to soils types, as long as they are in well drained soils. They bloom and perform best in cool weather. The Calendula Pacific Beauty (Pot Marigold), 'Calendula officinalis', is very easy to grow, and an adaptive plant that will prosper under most conditions. ... details
Sweet Pea - Perfume Delight Plant this sweet pea in full sun, but in a cool a spot as possible. The flower colors are purple, red, rose, white, pink, blue, scarlet, cream, and salmon. They will bloom about 1 week longer than other sweet peas. Position them away from winds and rotate locations from year to year to prevent sweet pea pests. In cold climates plant the seed in early spring, as soon as the soil can be worked. The Sweet Pea Perfume Delight, 'Lathyrus odoratus', is a mixture of several colors of very fragrant sweet peas. The flowers are slightly smaller, 3/4 to 1 inch flowers, than other annual sweet peas, but they are more heat resistant. They are used for cut flowers and for covering fences and walls if given the proper support. The fragrance of these flowers will take you to times past. In warm climates, plant in October through January for spring bloom. |
