Coleus - Dark Star
Poorly drained soils and excessive watering will damage coleus. Frost will cause them to die immediately. If a coleus plant is allowed to seed, it has completed its life cycle and will die. Coleus must have good soil drainage. The brilliant colors explode in sunny locations. These plants will do best in temperatures above 55 degrees. Plants suffering from "wet feet" will be stunted, leaves will turn a muddy brown, and leaf margins will be scorched. The coleus plants are a tender perennials. These new, bigger, sun loving varieties have revolutionized contanier gardening. Flower buds should be pinched off as soon as they develop. The Coleus Dark Star, 'Coleus hybrid', has dark purple foliage that glows with a subtle sheen, and features a nicely shaped scalloped edge. For zones 10-11, this plant can also be a perennial. Herb - Basil Purple Ruffles It is used in Italian foods and pesto and pasta sauces. Place the Basil seeds in well drained soil with lots of organic matter. Fresh basil makes a nice tea, an excellent vinegar, and tastes great fresh with fish, poultry, rice, mild vegetables, eggplant and many others. Purple Ruffles can be finiky because it needs a very uniform spot where it is not too hot, too cold, or too dry. Plant 1 to 2 weeks after the last average frost date. It is excellent for both culinary or ornamental uses in the garden or containers. To harvest, cut about a third of the branch from the top, down to where a new set of leaves is beginning to grow.
