Cotoneaster - Cranberry

The branches may root where they touch the ground. This dense shrub displays stiffly arching branches. The autumn leaf color is very attractive with shades of purple, red and bronze. Use this plant to cover large areas, as a foundation plant, a low informal hedge or for erosion control on steep banks. The small pink flowers appear in late spring and they will produce red cranberry-like berries in late summer. The Cotoneaster Cranberry, 'Cotoneaster apiculatus', is a deciduous shrub that is easily grown in average, medium wet, well-drained soils in full sun. Sumac - Flameleaf White-tailed deer also use it as a browse. The Flameleaf Sumac, Rhus copallina, is a shrub or occasionally a small tree. Fruit matures in late summer remaining attached into winter and is eaten by many species of birds and white-tailed deer. When left alone it will often form thickets. Leaves have a winged axis and turn flame red to dark purple in the fall, hence the common name. It is a prolific sprouter after a fire. It is widespread in open uplands along fence rows and in waste places.
