The Cucumber Armenian Burpless, 'Cucumis satiovus', is a slicing cucumber that is slightly sweet, crisp, and never bitter. The Armenian Burpless is very long and is best harvested short at 18 inches. Want to try something new in your garden? This is the variety. It has excellent flavor and absolutely gorgeous light green, thin skin. It is also more heat resistant than most cucumbers and has a long production period, so you can harvest right into late fall. The Armenian Burpless cucumber is also called the Yard Long cucumber or Snake cucumber. Plant in the spring after the last average frost date. Do not plant late as hot temps may preclude good flowering. Cucumbers prefer light, rich, well drained fertile soil with lots of organic matter. Cucumbers have a shallow root system and therefore require regular moisture. Corn - Country Gentleman The tasty, sweet, milky heirloom corn is delightful to eat, and has one unusual trait, the kernels are not arranged in rows. This sweet corn is also known as Shoe Peg corn. It is very tasty to eat fresh and it is used for creamed corn. Plant in the spring, a week or two after the last spring frost or when the soil is warm. In the deep south, this can be as early as February. Successive plantings in two week intervals will produce a much longer cropping season. Corn prefers a deep, rich well drained soil. Harvest the ears when the husks are dark green and the silks are brown but not brittle. Corn is usually ready 3 weeks after silks appear.
