Dried Delights
The Flowers, Dried Delights, will help you enjoy bouquets from your garden year-round when you grow these flowers. Sometimes called everlastings, these varieties are well-suited to drying and other methods of preservation. Dried flowers provide endless possibilities for flower arrangements, wreaths, swags and other craft ideas. The Dried Flower packet contains seed of 20 different flowers that lend themselves to drying. When fresh flowers are scarce and expensive in the winter, arrangements of "everlastings" are a wonderful alternative for indoor floral decorations. Instructions for drying the flowers are found on these seed packets. Plant 1 to 2 weeks before the average last spring frost date. Place them in full sun and keep the soil well drained and moist. Mache - Corn - Salad - Big Seeded The Mache Corn Salad Big Seeded, 'Valerianella locusta', has the mildest flavor and softest texture of any salad green. The big-seeded variety handles the spring/summer heat without getting bitter which is great for north or south gardens. This old garden green, enjoyed in the late stone age, contrasts nicely with sharp-flavored greens in salads and tastes delightful cooked quickly like spinach. Light peanut flavored or light vinaigrette salad dressing is recommended. Mache is a cool season annual. The dark green spoon-shaped leaves are gathered into a rosette. It is a very attractive plant in the garden. This vegetable grows to 1 inch in diameter, but it can be harvested at almost any size. In warm climates, plant in the fall for winter harvest. The soil should be fertile, moist, and well drained. Mache can be planted in containers. |
