Dwarf Red Buckeye

Red buckeye’s lavish carmine flowers come early, too, and are an important source of food for hummingbirds in the months before most other plants are in flower. The lush foliage also provides excellent cover for songbirds. Its large, drooping, dark green leaves provide plenty of interest throughout the growing season. It is known for its deep crimson flowers borne in early summer. It is especially pretty when underplanted with early spring wildflowers. The Red Buckeye trees starts sending out tender new leaves as early as February, up to a month before the surrounding oaks and maples show any sign of renewed life. This deciduous tree is a wonderful little tree to plant at the edge of a woodland garden, near a patio, or as the focal point at the curve of a path. The Dwarf Red Buckeye tree, Aesculus pavia, is one of the first plants in the woodland to reawaken in spring. It is easy to grow. Columnar Swedish Aspen It is best suited for small yards, as a screen or a vertical accent. This tree is an excellent substitute for a Lombardy Poplar in cooler climates. The dark green leaves have a lighter silvery-green underside providing both visual interest and a soothing sound in the breeze and tremble with the faintest whisper of wind, creating the same pleasant rustling sounds as the leaves of Quaking Aspen. It is well adapted to very cold climates, but needs adequate moisture. The Columnar Swedish Aspen, Populus tremula 'Erecta', is native to the forests of Sweden. Somewhat adapted for street and boulevard planting, the Columnar Swedish Aspen will provide both visual interest and a soothing sound to the landscape. This slender tree is great for smaller spaces, screens and along drives. It is probably the narrowest of the columnar trees. This aspen is an excellent tree for lining driveways, fence-lines, shelterbelts or group plantings. The fall color can range from orange to red.
