Lilac - Ludwig Spaeth

It is easily grown in average, medium moist, well-drained soil in full sun. With its lovely spring accent, it makes a wonderful screen or border specimen. The blooms come late spring, extending the lilac season! This lilac has an outstanding open branched, upright habit useful in mixed shrub borders or in mass plantings. It grows 10-12 feet tall and 6-8 feet wide. Ludwig Spaeth Lilac, Syringa vulgaris 'Andenken an Ludwig Spaeth', is a French Hybrid Lilac with single red-purple flowers in early June that are excellent as cut flowers because of their very fine fragrance. Once it is established, it only needs occasional watering. This lilac is beautiful as a hedge or background planting. Ludwig Spaeth tolerates light shade, but best bloom is in full sun. Lilac - Persian A reasonably compact lilac for the smaller garden, and shrub border. This deciduous shrub has dark green foliage. The Persian Lilac, Syringa x persica, is a spreading, graceful shrub with arching branches, reaching 4 to 8 feet in height, 5 to 10 feet spread. The pale lilac flowers are fragrant, late spring blooming, abundantly produced on 2 to 3 inch long panicles.
