Mina Lobata - Spanish Flag

Plant in the spring, after the last average frost date or until early summer. The Spanish Flag is related to the morning glory and is sometimes called the Firecracker Vine or Exotic Love plant. Water frequently, they do not like to dry out. This plant has 1 to 2 inch tubular flowers that occur in spikes of up to 12 flowers. The Mina Lobata Spanish Flag, 'Tpomoea lobata', has sprays of crimson flowers that change to orange and yellow, then white, and are suitable of cuttings. They are crimson upon opening and then they change to orange/yellow and to white. The Spanish Flag is used for pots, baskets, climbing up fences, trellises, and ground cover. Shiso Perilla - Green aoshiso The Shiso Perilla Green (Aoshiso), 'Perella frutescens', is an intoxicating, flavorful herb that should be as popular as basil or cilantro. It is called "ohba' at sushi bars, and it is an absolute must for herb gardeners. The incredible flavor has been described as curry-like and a combination of cumin, cilantro, and parsley, with a hint of cinnamon. Shiso Perilla have green leaves that resemble parsley except they have sharply serrated edges. The crushed leaves smell like lemon balm. Herbalists claim Shiso has antibiotic qualities and is the one reason it is used with sushi. Mix or sprinkle over cucumbers, cabbage, fish, soups, rice, and potato dishes.
