Peony - Red
Peonies are one of the best cut flowers and are often used in the Midwest to decorate gravesites on Memorial Day. Although there are many Peonies on the market in this day and age, at this time we have chosen unnamed varieties, simply pink, red and white. The Red Peony, Paeonia lactiflora. Our red peony is a very dark flowering selection. Often thought of a plant used on the farm or out in the country, bring a little bit of that country feeling to your garden. Peonies can handle dry to moist sites, and do best in full sun but can handle some light shade. All of our peonies are widely adaptable to most soils across the country. It is not uncommon to see peonies planted along the driveway or lane in a mass. They bloom in mid spring and have very large, colorful blooms that stand out in the spring garden. Astilbe - Key Largo A moist, well-drained area is key for this plant. The Astilbe ‘Key Largo’, 'Astilbe simplicifolia', is a colorful feathery flower with bright shell pink blooms and shiny deep green foliage. Astilbe ‘Key Largo’ blooms in mid summer and is 16-20” tall and a plant width of 18-24”. ‘Key Largo’ is known to produce twice as many flowers than other types of Astilbe. In order to keep Astilbe looking good for the next year, do not cut it back in the winter, (the old foliage helps protect the plant from winter damage), but prune in early spring. Key largo is most successfully grown in a shady area but can tolerate some morning sun. Astilbe is considered to be deer resistant and will attract hummingbirds. Do not allow Astilbe ‘Key Largo’ to dry out. Astilbe can be used as cut flowers, perennial borders or shade gardens with Hosta’s and Ferns. The flowers contrast wonderfully with the dark green glossy foliage. |
