Poppy - California Orange
The California Poppy is a perennial that is usually grown as an annual. The California Poppy Orange, 'Eschscholzia californica', is the state flower of California. The orange, silky, saucer shaped 2 to 3 inch flowers have 4 delicate paper-like petals. On cloudy days or in the shade, the blooms will close. In zones 7-11, though, the foliage often overwinters. The California Orange Poppy needs full sun. Pinching off spent flowers increases the bloom period. The Poppy Orange can be used as a cut flower, wildflower plantings, and for soil erosion control. In warm climates seed in fall for impressive spring color. In cold climates, plant as soon as the ground can be worked. This Poppy blooms best in the cool weather of spring. When you see this flower planted in mass, you realize why it is their state flower. The Orange Poppy will grow in almost any soil that is well drained. ... more information
Mache Corn Salad - Big Seeded This old garden green, enjoyed in the late stone age, contrasts nicely with the sharp-flavored greens in salads. Mache Corn Salad is cool season annual. The leaves are so tender, they melt in your mouth. The Mache Corn Salad Big Seeded, 'Valerianella locusta', has the mildest flavor and softest texture of any salad green. In northern climates, plant in early spring as soon as the ground is workable. The leaves can be picked off when they are 1 to 2 inches long. To harvest, simply cut off at ground level. Mache prefers fertile, moist, and well drained soil. Great for both north and south gardens. It tastes delightful cooked quickly like spinach and combines nicely with fruits and vegetables. We chose the big-seeded Mache variety because it handles spring/summer heat without getting bitter. |
