Radish - Cherry Belle

Bigger radishes get pithy and hot. This spring radish grows best during the cool periods of spring and fall. The Cherry Belle is great if eaten fresh, in salads, or in sandwiches. It can be grown inside during the winter. The Radish Cherry Belle, 'Raphanus sativus', has a mild flavor and solid white flesh that makes the Cherry Belle very popular. Plant in early spring as soon as soil temperatures rise above 40 degrees. The flower pods are edible and they will grow in the shade. Radishes prefer loose, light soil with a fair amount of organic material. Harvest when the radish is 1 inch in diameter. They an be ready to eat in just 24 days. The bitter flavor of bitter melon is due to quinine, and is a taste that is quickly acquired by adults and kids. When mature, the melons are very showy, which is why it is commonly used as an ornamental. Plant in the spring, 1 to 2 weeks after the last frost when soil temperatures are warm. Keep the plant moist but not soggy. Harvest the fruit when they are no longer than 6 inches and are still light green in color.
