Serviceberry - European

European Serviceberry, amelanchier lamarckii, is considered a large shrub, or small tree, with white flowers produced in loose clusters of 6-10 in early spring, and then followed by sweet, juicy purple-black fruit in summer. The round, dark green foliage has yellow to carmine-red fall color. European Serviceberry is a medium to fast growing shrub that grows 10-15 feet in height as well as width. Snowball Bush - Common Birds, particularly Cedar Waxwings, are very fond of the berries, and can often be found snacking during the winter. Have a snowball fight in June! Kids and adults alike love this rounded plant with masses of flowers. Grows best in full sun to partial shade. It is a deciduous thicket-forming Old World shrub. About the same time, the bright red, attractive berries ripen, and persist on the plant throughout the winter. In the fall, the leaves turn a wonderful burgundy reddish-purple. The Common Snowball Bush, Viburnum opulus, also called the European Cranberry bush produces white flowers in late spring.
