Snowberry - White

Hummingbirds love the flowers, and in the fall the white berries are an excellent food for birds. White Snowberry is a dense, twiggy shrub that grows 5-6 feet tall and 3-6 feet wide. It should be pruned before new growth begins. It spreads by suckers underground. It is accented with blue-green foliage, and then produces large white berries in autumn. White Snowberry, symphoricarpos albus, has dainty pink flowers that appear in July. It prefers sun to medium shade, tolerates any soil, and is easy to transplant. Chokeberry - Black Its ability to withstand wet conditions makes it suitable for growing along ponds, streams or water gardens. The Black Chokeberry, Aronia melanocarpa 'black', is an open, upright, spreading, somewhat rounded but leggy, deciduous shrub which typically grows 3-6’ tall. It displays clusters of 5-petaled, white flowers in spring which are followed in early autumn by blackish purple, blueberry-sized fruits which usually do not persist into winter. Although technically edible, the fruits are extremely tart and bitter, and are not recommended for eating off the bush.
