Southern Red Oak

The Southern Red Oak tree, Quercus falcata, is characterized by its rough bark. It is a tree of the Old South, ranging from Maryland to Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas. The bark is dark gray in color, furrowed, and is marked by rough ridges and plates. The acorns are usually produced singly, and biennially. The wood of the Southern Red Oak is strong and coarse-grained. The Southern Oak tree is deciduous and is a good shade tree adapted to drier sites. Southern Red Oak trees are a medium-sized tree with a short trunk and large branches supporting a rounded crown. The Southern red oak is also referred to as Spanish oak. White Walnut The White Walnut tree, Juglans cinerea, also known as White walnut and Butternut tree is a small to medium-sized tree. The smaller branches tend to bend downwards and then turn up at the ends. The crown is open, broad, irregular in outline and rounded at the top. The root system is composed of a number of wide-spreading laterals that grow to a considerable depth. Usually a taproot develops in deep soils. White Walnut trees grows fast, especially as a seedling, but usually does not live longer than 75 years. Nuts resemble Black Walnut, but smaller, with an oily, spicy flavor. Tree is best known for the rich quality of its wood.
