Squash - Winter - Buttercup - Burgess
The Squash Winter Burgess Buttercup, 'Cucurbita maxima', is arguably the best tasting and best flavored winter squash. Plant in the spring, 2 to 4 weeks after the last average frost date. Being a winter squash, it will store for several months. The 6 foot vines have flattened turban-shaped squash that are 5 to 8 inches in diameter and about 4 pounds in weight. The Burgess Buttercup Squash has very sweet, stringless, and fiberless flesh. Harvest after first or second light frost. Winter squash cannot be overripe, but can be under ripe. Caraway The Caraway, 'Carum carvi', produces a seed tastes like a combination of dill & anise with a nutty flavor. Caraway prefer well drained soil. Plant in the spring as soon as the soil can be worked or in the fall for a crop next year. Try grinding up fresh seed and sprinkle over fresh popcorn! The flavor is like a combination of anise and dill. The flower stalks are 2 foot high and have clusters of tiny whites flowers in late spring and early summer.
