St Johnswort - Kalm
The flowers bloom for about 6 weeks and butterflies, bumblebees, and other pollinators love the nectar. Flowers give way to beaked, oval, brown seed capsules that mature in fall and often persist on the shrub until spring. It prefers well-drained soil. It has a deep blue-green foliage and is great for foundation or border planting. Johnswort, hypericum kalmianum, is a low growing, mounded shrub with bright yellow flowers, 1-2" in diameter, from July to mid-Aug. This compact, easy-to-grow shrub forms nice masses and should be placed where the bright yellow flowers show to full advantage. It has no serious disease or insect problems. Sweetshrub It grows somewhat taller in shade than in sun, and it is tolerant of a wide range of soils, but prefers rich loam. The Sweetshrub, Calycanthus floridus, or Carolina allspice is a dense, rounded deciduous shrub with a suckering habit which grows 6-9' tall with an equal or slightly greater spread. Also commonly called sweetshrub and strawberry bush because of the reference to the fragrant blooms which have been described as combining hints of pineapple, strawberry and banana.
