Thyme - Common
Plant Thyme in warm, light, loose, and well drained soil. Plant a hedge of thyme around your herb or vegetable garden. The Thyme Common, 'Thymus vulgaris', is a herb for cooks who don't know which herb to use. Thyme is easy to grow from seed. Thyme plays a part in many French dishes and is great with fish, poultry, vegetables, mushrooms, omelets, soups, bean and lentil casseroles, rice, and seafood chowders. Thyme will go with almost anything. The use of Thyme in culinary pursuits is extensive. Thyme is a very elegant, small garden shrub. This excellent ornamental is great in rock gardens, edging, small borders and small hedges. The small plant with 1/4 inch leaves and delicate, edible flowers, appearing in early summer, is also a lovely 12 inch landscape plant. Bok Choy - White Stem They are used in stir-fries with beef, pork and seafood. The succulent leaves have a mild Swiss chard mustard flavor and are very tender and tasty. They are great in salads when the leaves are young. White Stems are also called White Mustard Cabbage or Pak Choy. Bok Choy prefers rich, moist, well drained soil with lots of organic matter. Harvest the heads after 8 weeks, or when the yellow flowers emerge from the center. Plant in late summer for fall and early winter harvest. Plant as soon as the soil can be worked in the spring. In mild climates, plant in late fall for winter harvest. Drop into soup and simmer just long enough for leaves to become limp. |
