This is one of the best all purpose tomatoes grown. Rutgers Select produces medium round globe fruits with smooth firm flesh that is ideal for canning and slicing. As with all tomato plants staking won't hurt but isn't manditory. They need at least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day. The Tomato Rutgers Select, 'Lycopersicon lycopersicum', is an all-purpose variety that is ideal for canning. The Rutgers Select variety ripens evenly from inside out. Tomatoes prefer well drained soil that is high in organic matter. Tomatoes should be planted outside after the last average frost date. The bright red fruits have a full-bodied flavor in an attractive old-time favorite. In warm winter/hot summer areas, tomatoes can be planted in early fall for winter harvest.
