Corn - Country Gentleman It is very tasty to eat fresh and it is used for creamed corn. Corn is usually ready 3 weeks after silks appear. Harvest the ears when the husks are dark green and the silks are brown but not brittle. Named for a famous 19th century American agricultural magazine, Country Gentleman is an excellent old variety of corn for the home gardener, Plants are 6 to 7 feet tall and the ears are 8 inches long. In the deep south, this can be as early as February. The Corn Sweet Country Gentleman, 'Zea mays', was introduced in 1891. Corn prefers a deep, rich well drained soil. |
